According to legend, St. Brigid made a cross from the rushes that she found on the floor beside a dying man in order to explain Jesus' death on the cross and His rising again. The man (possibly her father) converted to Christianity before his passing. To this day, school children across Ireland make Saint Brigid's crosses from rushes to commemorate St Brigid's day (1st of February).
